Fantasy Basketball Draft

Ahh, the best part . . . pizza, scouting reports, and your gameplan. Print out this page to assist you during your draft. If you have any questions please contact us.

There are several different ways to hold a draft:

Style 1) Draft however you want.

Style 2) For those with time constraints a variation of the standard drafting technique is recommended. Draft in order 1 2 3 4 5 in round one and 5 4 3 2 1 in round two, and so on, until 10 starters and 4 reserves have been selected.

Style 3) A player auction. In our humble opinion this is the only way to hold a fantasy basketball draft, especially if your league has a winners pool. This draft takes from 1-3 hours and requires you understand these instructions, but it's well worth your time.

  • First a minimum bid must be set, say $.25 per player.

  • Owners will take turns selecting players to bid on until everybody has their starting roster of 4 Forwards, 2 Centers, and 4 Guards.

  • There is no order to which players are selected for bidding, whoever's turn it is chooses a player.

  • It makes no sense for an owner to start a round of bidding with a player at a position that owner has already filled.

  • Here's how the bidding works:

    • All starters must be purchased with the league's salary cap (ante). e.g. If each owner puts $25 into the winners pool then that is your salary cap. If your league has no ante then simply set an arbitrary salary cap. The actual number doesn't matter, just so everybody starts with the same.

    • Owners take turns choosing a player to bid on.

    • *** Owner declares player position, if in question (see below).

    • Owner establishes initial bid.

    • For example, owner says "Shawn Kemp for $1, as a Forward. "

    • Any and all owners can then raise the bid. e.g. "Kemp for $2"

    • Going once, twice, and sold to the owner with the best offer.

  • Repeat the bidding until all owners have the 10 starters. Note: At the end, somebody will get their last player for the league minimum, since there are no competing bids.

  • Finally, the 4 reserves must be selected. Each owner draws a number from a hat. Selections are then made using the 12345 54321 (for a 5 team league) draft order.

  • *** Player Positions: There are some players that occasionally start for their NBA team as a forward or a center (Shawn Kemp), or at guard and forward (Kobe Bryant). The owner that throws out the name (not the purchasing owner) announces the players position before bidding. That players position is, of course, subject to a league vote if necessary. To simplify this process just use the player positions at NBA.com or use the position that the player plays most.
